Freyja has her pups!

Update:  March 24, 2007:  The pups are rambunctious and doing great!  They are now 6 weeks old and will be having their temperament, CERF, and conformation evaluations over the next one to two weeks. They grow so fast!

We had beautiful weather this week (until today!), so the pups have been outside a good part of the time, running around, chasing Freyja, Zydeco, and Zuzu around the backyard.  Freyja now nurses just occasionally, mostly while standing up so she can make a quick get away.  The pups are good eaters and are now on hard kibble with a bit of goat milk.  We are trying to teach them to "do their business"  outside, so right after they wake, and after they eat, we all go outside.  It's amazing how they catch on.  If they are in their pen, they are definitely staying on the newspaper.  Out of the pen, it is a  50/50 shot. Some are better than others. I try to spend individual time with the pups, and have them away from their littermates.

Outside, they have a small teeter board that they walk on without any trouble, a low board walk, and a ladder flat on the ground to climb on and walk over.  I also cut some holes in a box to make a Cave!  I would love to find something to make an inexpensive round tunnel out of, so any suggestions are welcome!

Zuzu is a great auntie!  She loves to play and watch over the pups.  Zydeco doesn't care much for them.  The pups will run after him, trying to give him kisses and play with him, but he just growls (not seriously of course) and runs away!  Every once in a while when no one is looking, he gets close enough to smell one.

Update:  March 4, 2007:  The pups have opened their eyes and yes, it's a big world.  Their teeth are coming  and they're climbing on, chewing on, and biting one another, as well as on "Auntie" Zuzu and mom Freyja.  Zydeco just gets kisses when he chooses to come close enough.

They've ventured out of the whelping box now and have met vinyl, wood, and brick flooring for short periods of time.  As long as Mom is with them it is no big deal (but monsters come out when Mom's not around). We've started offering goat milk and pureed kibble.  They seem to get the idea of lapping it up but with the occaisional face plant into the dish.

Mr. Blue's head is gorgeous thanks to good genes
from both his mom and dad.

Update:  February 25, 2007:  Eyes have opened this past week and personalities are starting to show.  They grow and change so very fast.

Miss Tawny looks a lot like her dad did at this age.

Update:  February 16, 2007:  Pups are a week old, growing like crazy, and doing wonderful. Freyja is a great mom. So far, Zydeco and Zuzu have done a bit of sniffing but aren't quite sure about these new additions to the family.

Update:  February 9, 2007:  Four pups arrived in quick succession this morning.  Four pups total, three girls: one tawny with black mask, two silver tawny, weighing in at 15 ounces, 15ounces, and 14ounces respectively and one silver tawny boy: weighing 14ounces.  All are eating away and mom dog Freyja is doing great.  Dad dog Brett is 1800 miles away and totally oblivious.

Freyja was efficient, having all four of
the pups in less than three hours..

The babies are all happy, healthy, and
nursing vigorously.
