UKC Total Dogs

The slogan of the United Kennel Club is, "Our dogs do things."  To reflect this, UKC offers a special Total Dog award to dogs that earn titles in both conformation and one of the performance events:  obedience, weight pulling, or agility for Chinooks.

As a breeder, the achievement I am the most proud of is the Chinooks I've bred that have earned the title of Total Dog.  Rangeley, Bannack, Quinn, and Thunder are my pride and joy.  I can only lay claim to doing the work involved in achieving this with Thunder as the others were all earned by other humans.  Again, other people make Rain Mountain look good.  I'm very pleased to consider all the humans listed here as my friends.  I'm just as proud of them as I am of their dogs.

Other than listing the Rain Mountain dogs first, there is no specific order to this list and it changes as new titles are earned.  The Total Dog award reflects only UKC titles so dogs with AKC CGC (Canine Good Citizen) or AHBA HIC (Herding Instinct Certified) and HCT (Herding Capability Tested) titles are not reflected.  (There are still more titles Chinooks can earn in various organizations but that is a longer list than I will go into here.)

A few notes on some of the dogs here:  Joyce Maley and Tundra were the very first to earn a Total Dog award.  Bannack is quite outstanding as he has earned a U-CD (Companion Dog) and U-CDX (Companion Dog Excellent) obedience title in addition to his weight pull title and most recently, an AKC Agility title.  Susan Fletcher and Dakota also have multiple titles in obedience, weight pulling and a conformation championship.  Corine Lindhorst and Phoenix were one of the first to ever win a U-CD title which is not easy when you live in Montana where opportunities to show in any venue are few and far between unless you travel great distances.  Connie Erb and Sun are not only agility titled but one of the top ranked agility teams in the country.  Donna Canfield and Karelia are very special in that Karelia not only is a Total Dog but also is the first Chinook from the COA Cross Program to earn this award.  Many of these people and dogs are still competing for additional titles.

These dogs are the best of the best.  They have earned conformation championships validating that their structure and movement are correct for the Chinook according to the UKC standard AND, by earning performance titles, have proven that they have the temperament to work.  The Chinook is a versatile breed and not all live in areas where they can pull sleds across vast wilderness of snow covered trails.  Just like sledding, obedience, agility and weight pulling all prove that the dog works well under human direction, one of the original goals Arthur Walden had in developing the breed.

I cannot guarantee that this list is complete.  If you know of any dogs that I've missed, please let me know and I'll add them.  Their accomplishments deserve recognition.  And as a side note, all the Rain Mountain dogs that have earned the Total Dog award are also good recreational sled dogs.  We don't have a title for sledding yet but hopefully a Working Dog Program will be in place soon where sledding, backpacking, and other such accomplishments can be noted.
