Over the Generations

I finally had to write this all down just to clarify it in my own mind.  I can remember all the litters I've raised myself easily but as the number of Rain Mountain dogs grew, it began to get harder to figure out which ones were what level of descent from my core group of dogs. Most of them I keep track of by whether they are Holly's pup, grands, great grands, or now great-great grands. I have marked in green the dogs that live or lived with me for at least some part of their lives, that I co own with other families and Chinook kennels, or that I own some interest in the breeding rights to.  The ones marked in blue are litters I've raised in part or whole here at my house.  The great majority of these dogs are here soley because they go back to Holly and I've watched them grow into wonderful and loving family pets.



Generation 1
 Northdown Skykomish
I purchased Sky from Harry Gray of Northdown Kennel in Waldoboro, Maine summer of 1988.  I had been waiting for many months for her and had almost given up hope when Harry finally called.  Sky was about five months old at the time.
 Hurricane Cheechako
Chako came to me in 1989 when I received a call from Joyce Maley.  She had placed Chako as a pup with an Air Force couple.  When they got out of the military, they moved to Alaska and got divorced.  The wife could no longer afford to keep Chako and was feeding him solely the scraps from her waitressing job.  He just happened to be the perfect mate for Sky and the perfect gentleman.
Rose's Vixon
In 1992 Sky was killed after being hit by a car at the same time that the software company I was part owner of was going under.  It was a dark time in my life.  Chinook owners got together and found me Vixon, a three year old bitch that needed a good home and who also was a good mate for Chako.

Because I had some problems show up, I did not continue with this line.  Pups were sweet but shy despite good socialization, leading me to believe that shyness in Chinooks is at least partially genetic.  I also had pups with long coats and both Chinook seizures and general epileptic seizures.  It was a hard decision to make as a new breeder but one I'm glad I did make.

This litter was also a learning experience.  It was a vast improvement over the Flood litter in structure and size but since the timing was all wrong (I was unemployed when they were ready for placement), I went for good pet homes rather than holding out for homes where they would be kept intact for breeding.

"Holly" is Chako's niece through his brother Hurricane Mackenzie.  At the same time that I was given Vixon, I was also given Holly, who was a pup at the time, by her breeder, Linda Daniels.  Holly's litter had shocked the Chinook world by having some black and tan and gray and tan pups along with the typical tawny colors.

Things finally came together in the mid 1990s with the Heatwave litter of 1995 and the Snowflake litter of 1996.  Though she was my third Chinook brood bitch, Holly is the foundation of today's Rain Mountain bloodline.

Jenna is actually a well loved member of the Strle family of Bear Creek Kennels and Racing but the Strles were kind enough to send her back to me for a year during which time we finished her championship and bred her.  The first litter she and Rorik produced was so very nice that I repeated the breeding again and was not disappointed.  Jenna is now retired at Bear Creek where she keeps her son Apache in line.

 This is where it gets confusing as the Rain Mountain line now has enough dogs of different pedigrees that we can start breeding them together.  For example, Taaku is from Generation 4 but she if she's bred to Thunder from Generation 3, what generation would the pups be considered?.  Rather than splitting hairs, I'm going to consider these to be the later generations.

Balsam Ridge Chinooks is planning a breeding of Tatla into their "Cross to Purebred" home-grown stud Tucker for spring of 2007.

Both Tatla and Tatoosh were specifically placed with Balsam Ridge and Granite Hill respectively so that they could be bred into the Chinook Cross lines.  Tatoosh and Tannacross' pups will be eligible for purebred status when they are two years old **IF** they meet all requirements.  Balsam Ridge Tucker has already met these requirements so his pups with Tatla will have purebred status from birth.

Even when I have no ownership interest in a litter at all, I still am thrilled to see pups that come partially from my line, as in the case of the Tay x Mocha litter and Tay's litter with Sky.  This lets' me see how my line turns out when combined with other bloodlines out there, picking up other good traits in the process.
