Things have been quiet around here this month
but they won't remain quiet for long. PR
Moonsong Kamiak Mystry of Rain has joined the family. Miss Happy
Pants as she has come to be known, was just what the doctor ordered
after the year I've had. Many thanks to her breeder Carie Taylor
(along with mom-dog Katsuk's co owner Anne Harvey) for giving me such a
gift and to Donna Canfield and Joann Blackmun for providing their stud
Legend as sire for this pretty little girl.Thank goodness puppies crash out frequently. Kamiak's favorite activity is attacking her "big brother" Taataga every five minutes that she is awake. Taga has been exceptionally gentle with her even though I'm sure her baby teeth hurt when she nips him. She also finds him a good cushion too as you can see in the photo to the left. Please visit Kamiak's first webpage. Thank goodness Kamiak does crash out on a regular basis as after six months of limping around, I've finally had surgery to fix my torn tendon and I'll be in a cast and walking boot for about six weeks. But thanks to help from friends like Carie, the team is already in training and I hope to be able to start sledding shortly after Christmas. Until then, I'm holding down the van while the others are out running. Taga is doing well with his initial harness training; Taaku is slowly getting her speed back up after having her litter this past summer and Lolo is finally using the basic pulling skills she learned last year before she broke her leg and ended her season early. Kamiak's too young to pull this season but will start running loose with the team as soon as I am recovered enough to get on a sled. If the snow this season holds on long enough, Kamiak may get some initial harness training on spring snow then can continue during our spring rigging season, which lasts until summer weather gets too warm. Though I'll be staying close to home with my tendon recovery, Carie will be taking Lolo and Kodi to the Cascade APBT Conformation Show and Weight Pull over Thanksgiving weekend in Longview, Washington. Kodi only needs one successful pull to finish his UWP title and it will be Lolo's first weight pull ever. The others will stay home with me as Taaku has taken this year off of showing and Taataga won't start until he's through this very gawky growth spurt he's in now. Kamiak will have her first time in the ring during the February 11th and 12th show, also sponsored by the Cascade APBT club and in Longview, when she goes into the non-licensed Novice Puppy Class. Congrats to our newest Champion! PR BrownStone Lolo Kumtux of Rain finished her UKC Championship with a Best of Breed under judge Dennis Blickenstaff and all her majors from the Bred By Exhibitor class. Though still a lanky teenager, Lolo shows great promise of being one of the best Chinooks we've produced. She will be concentrating on sledding, weight pulling, and breaking her addiction to chasing Kitty Rory for the next while though I hope in later years that she will come back to the show ring to earn her Grand Championship and compete as a special. We're still waiting for her win photos to arrive but will post them as soon as they get here. August

Moonsong Chinooks welcome their first litter! Though the Moonsong boys have been active on the stud scene for some time now, the first Moonsong litter has just arrived. It's quite a gang so please check them out. Mom is Ch. PR Hurricane Katsuk Rain Song, #3 ranked Chinook for 2005 in Top Ten points. Katsuk is the daughter of our own Grand Ch. PR Rain Mountain Tonasket Thunder and littermate to Malibu and Cheyenne. Dad of the new Moonsong pups is Ch. Cloudburst Wonalancet Legend owned by Joann Blackmun ofMaryland and Donna Canfield of Maine and Florida. This is a first litter for both. August

Welcome Home Saber PR Rain Mountain Skagit
Saber
has arrived to spend a month here on Rain Mountain, his first visit
back since he was eight weeks old. Saber is owned by James and
Jeanette Boisse of Castro Valley, California (a San Francisco suburb)
and James and his two daughters were kind enough to make the drive
north to drop him off. While Saber is here, we hope to show him
and if Mother Nature cooperates, he may even be bred. His
intended is our own Grand
Ch. PR Rain Mountain Kutaan Taaku of Bear Creek.August

A Great Start for our favorite non Chinook, Vahhala's Jazz Singer! "Singer" took a 3-point major at the Mahoning-Shenango KC show in Ohio. I'm quite honored to be one of Singer's backers as her owner/breeder, Melodye Wagner, is well known and highly respected in the world of Basset Hounds. Yes, I said Basset Hounds. I know they are not much like Chinooks but I had a Basset for my next door neighbor when I was growing up in Alabama and have always been intrigued by them since. My vet does all the work for Basset Rescue here in the Puget Sound area and is a former Basset breeder himself and he has piqued my interest even further. "Our" plan is to have Singer stay our with handler Nina Fetterer until she finishes her AKC championship then she will retire to life as a brood bitch and valued companion of Melodye. Singer's favorite hobby when not in the show ring is flying. She has perfected the art of leaping from the back of her recliner and going totally airborne. I do understand though that this is quite hard on the recliner as Bassets are not small dogs even though they are short. Many thanks to Melodye for allowing me to be a part of Singer's show career. You never know, maybe someday there will be a Basset on Rain Mountain. ![]() Congrats
to our grand-puppy! Grand

PR WoodsRunner Kanku Ota knocked 'em dead at the UKC Top Ten. She
not only took the title of Best in Top Ten but made all the cuts to the
final round. "Koty" is owned by Diana Fowler and Connie Jones and
was handled by Diana's friend, Vanessa Ash (due to custodial "mom"
Diana's bad knees). The final twenty contenders were presented
individually on Friday evening in a special show that was filmed for
Outdoor Life Network.
This is the highest TopTen position a Chinook has reached so
far. Stay tuned and we'll let you know when the OLN show
will be on.Koty is the daughter of Grand Ch. PR Frontier Chenoa and our baby John John from the 2000 Holiday litter, PR Rain Runner Johnny Rebel. She was bred by Connie and Bob Jones of WoodsRunner Chinooks in Portland, Maine. Koty comes from a long line of excellent sled dogs in addition to their successes in the show ring. Dad John John was wheel dog for the WoodsRunner Sandwich Notch 30 sled team and boasts of a pedigree of recreational sled dogs. Chenoa too runs on the WoodsRunner team. I'm very proud of the continuing success Diana has had in the show ring with both Koty, her sister Katy, and Rain Mountain's own Molly, Grand Ch. PR Rain Mountain Molipaluk. Molly's list of success is too long to list here! Again, congratulations to Diana and Connie Jones. Once again, the combination of WoodsRunner, Rain Mountain, and Frontier Chinooks has produced a real winner.

Welcome to the 7 Seven Lakes Chinooks!
Ch.
PR Frontier Dandelion Sky and PR Alpine Trefenwyd of Moonsong are the
proud parents of seven pups born Saturday and Sunday July 16th and
17th. Five boys and two girls took their own sweet time
arriving. Sky and the babies are doing great though Susan Shemeta
and Ron Shoener are still a bit short of sleep. Aunt Ladybug is
thrilled to have babies in the house.

Huge congratulations to Joyce Maley and
Hurricane Chinooks! Ch.
PR Mystic's Hurricane Sydney nailed Best of Breed at the 2005
Chinook
National Specialty in New Hampshire over some very tough
competition. June Pasko was the judge.
This is totally amazing as it is the fifth time that one of Joyce's dogs has won National Best of Breed. She won twice with Grand Ch. Hurricane Mackenzie, once with Grand Ch. PR Hurricane Chaser, and once with Grand Ch. PR Hurricane Janacek. This speaks very highly of Joyce's breeding program. She definitely has good movement in her dogs and the judges see that. Sydney's pedigree is below. You can see that she has big paws to fill in the show ring and fill them she has even though she has just turned two years old. The first time I met Sydney was the day before the 2003 Chinook National Specialty when I ran to the airport, leaving Joyce at my house delivering pups, to pick up Sydney and her sister, Mystic Wahkiakum Rain (Kia). It has been quite common in the Chinook community to trade pups. In 1992 Linda Daniels of Mystic Chinooks had given me Holly so in 1997 I gave her Dixie, formally known as Rain Mountain Anasazi Mystic. In 2002 Dixie's sister Jenna had such a gorgeous litter that I convinced Linda to let me sponsor the breeding of Dixie to Joyce's Janacek. With a little arm twisting, Linda was persuaded to send Dixie to Joyce for a vacation and while there Dixie earned all but one major for her UKC Championship and was bred to Janacek. She returned home to Minnesota and delivered five healthy pups there, two of which flew out to Seattle when they were eight weeks old. Joyce and I spent the lonog 4th of July weekend going back and forth over who would take which pup. I liked Kia's quiet demeanor and Joyce admired Sydney's spirit so the decision was made and Sydney went back to South Carolina with Joyce. Congratulations to Joyce and Sydney. I'm very proud of you both. I'm glad that I was able to play my small part in bringing Sydney into this world and getting the two of you together. I'm also very proud that the Rain Mountain line goes back to Hurricane in the very beginning (through Hurricane Cheechako and Mystic Sahalee Rain, daughter of Chako's brother Mackenzie) and in more recent years through our joint Hurricane-Rain breeding projects.

The
highly anticipated litter of Grand Ch. PR Rain Mountain Kutaan Taaku of
Bear Creek and UWP Grand Ch. PR Rain Mountain Tonasket Thunder CGC HCT
has finally arrived! Though Thunder is no longer
with us to help raise his children, Taaku is the proud and diligent mom
of
three. Big Dan (named after my vet of 20+ years, Dan Frey DVM),
Alan (named after Dan's partner Alan Marsh, DVM, owner of Woodinville
Animal Hospital), and Mary (like the others, named after my friend of
30+ years Mary Zipoy Baker whose birthday is the 19th of May) are all
gaining weight rapidly. Right now all three are tawny with black
masks but I suspect the boys will lighten up a great deal and end up
with a lot of gold and cream though mary is the spitting image of
Taaku. No photos yet but I'll get some later this week.

It may be April Fool's Day but this is no joke. The pups are here! Between 1:30am and about 10am today Ch. PR Thunder Paws Nany gave birth to eight pups, six girls and two boys. Mom is resting, the pups are eating, the Yorkies are very curious, Kathy Maurer is taking a well deserved nap and all is well with the world. Proud Papa is Ch. PR Rain Mountain Potlatch Kodiak and Scott assures me that he is showing Kodi the photos of his new kids. This is a first litter for both Nany and Kodi. Somewhere up above, we all know that Harvey Noble is smiling down at us, happy that his dreams have finally come true.
March 2005
On March 21st, our beloved Thunder went to sleep forever. He is greatly missed and the house seems empty without his larger than life presence (not to mention, he was a darned big dog). Please stop by and read a bit about Thunder's life. Ch.
PR Rain Mountain Potlatch Kodiak is handing out cigars! The
pregnancy of his true love, Ch. PR Thunder Paws Nany has been confirmed
and approximately six pups are due the first weekend in April.
This will be the first litter for both Mom and Dad.
This litter is extra special and likely the yhumans involved will sniffle a little along the way. Nany was bred by Richalene Kelsay of Thunder Paws Chinooks and lived with our friend harvey Noble of Tollfield, Alberta until Harvey's sudden and unexpected death in 2004. Harvey had always dreamed of finishing Nany's championship and breeding her. His very sweet sister, Kathy Noble Maurer and her husband Dick Maurer, took in Nany after Harvey's death and Kathy set out to make sure Harvey's dreams would be fulfilled. Nany finished her championship in the summer of 2004, which was the first step. An exhaustive husband hunt was conducted and Kodi chosen as the best candidate. (Rain Mountain will be assisting with puppy placements but please be warned that we have a long list of potential homes already.)
HUGE congratulations to JoAnn Filce for competing in and placing in her first ever race on February 5th and 6th! The race in Priest Lake, Idaho was sponsored by the Cascade Seld Dog Club and JoAnn entered a 2-dog team of Olaf the Eurohound and Mimi the Irish Water Spaniel in the Novice Class. Olaf and Mimi together are a lot faster than her Chinook Dave and as a threesome they can be a bit rowdy so for this first race, she ran with just the two dogs. Nonethesless, JoAnn placed 4th on Saturday and 3rd on Sunday for an overall placement (an average of the two times) of 4th in the class. Though we've had a lousy year for snow this year, we're already looking forward to next winter and in the meantime are running with our rigs again and hope to keep it up until hot weather sets in.
I hope that I will be able to live up to the expectations everyone has of me. The "work" I have bene acknowledged for is not really work since I do it for fun. |
