Starting the Rain Mountain line was not easy. I knew what I wanted to produce but it was not easy to get both the look and the health at the same time. Pups from my first two litters all were placed as pets because they did not meet the criteria I set in order to go on. This doesn't mean that my original breeding stock was inferior in any way. They were excellent Chinooks that passed all health screens but simply did not produce the quality of pups I wanted in order to move forward with improving our breed.
These Chinooks did produce wonderful family pets though and they taught me a heck of a lot about breeding, whelping and rearing pups, and how to place pups in the best possible homes. I made a lot of mistakes and these dogs all loved me despite them.
Eventually I did find the right basis for the Rain Mountain line and it has now progressed into the fifth generation. The credit all goes to the Chinooks here. They were the best of companions. Those that have crossed the "Rainbow Bridge" are missed on a daily basis. Those that have gone on to new homes, I'm lucky enough to stay in regular contact with. And those that are still living with me are probably raiding the garbage can as I write this.
Because there are only so many Chinooks that I can keep as pets, giving them both the time and attention they have earned, I do occasionally place retired breeding stock in pet homes so they can be spoiled rotten. This allows me to bring in younger Chinooks to keep the Rain Mountain line going strong. Many breeders such as myself will occasionally have retired breeding stock available for placement.
