The Rain Mountain Times
Summer/Fall 2004, Volume XVI, Number 3
Fun in the Sun!

Summer is time to kick back and relax.  This year we've scaled back our summer activities after spending every weekend on the go for so much of the past year and a half.  No weekly dog classes and far fewer dog shows than the last two summers and the weather is too hot for sledding or rigging so we're enjoying life just hanging out in the garden.

That doesn't mean we've been completely lazy though.  The highlight of June was a trip to the Chinook National Specialty and the UKC Premier and Top Ten.  Rain Mountain was well represented and we got to see many friends, pups that left here at eight weeks old, and the offspring of Rain Mountain litters from years gone by.  Carie Taylor and I drove from Seattle to Kalamazoo, Michigan then took the time to vacation our way home.  You can see some of our millions of photos here.

July was the UKC Washington Classic, hosted by the Puget Sound K-9s (Ginger is a member).  We had a great turn out of about a dozen Chinooks showing in this all-breed event.  The highlights of the weekend were many, including a Best of Breed and Group 1 for Taaku, a Best of Breed and new Champion title for Frontier Rain Dancer McKenzie along with the ring debut of two of the pups from her first litter, Willy and Copper; and the Best of Breed and new Champion title for Thunder Paws Nany the beloved pet of our sadly missed friend Harvey Noble.

A population explosion!

A number of litters are planned in the northwest, with breedings planned for summer and fall.
  • Ch. PR Hurricane Malibu Rain and Ch. PR Thunder Paws Nany were bred in July and we are waiting now for confirmation of Nany's pregnancy.  This is a joint project of Kathy Maurer, Richalene Kelsay, and Ginger Corley.  Malibu (Grand Ch. PR Rain Mountain Tonasket Thunder x Ch. PR Hurricane Electra) is owned by Carla Thieme and Ginger Corley and Nany (Grand Ch. PR WoodsRunner Duncan x ARBA Ch. Boreayl's Patent Pending) is owned by Kathy Maurer and Richalene Kelsay.
  • PR Alpine Treffenwyd of Moonsong (Tay) and Ch. PR Spring creek's Storm runner (Mocha) were bred in July and we are waiting for this pregnancy to be confirmed as well.  Tay (PR Aspencreek Kobi x Mountain Laurel Nesika) is owned by Carie Taylor and Mocha (Grand Ch. PR Rain Mountain Tonasket Thunder x PR WoodsRunner Brandy) is owned by Pam Chambers.
  • Ch. PR Hurricane Malibu Rain and Ch. PR Frontier Rain Dancer McKenzie will be bred in late July or early August.  Malibu is owned by Carla Thieme and Ginger Corley and McKenzie (Ch. WoodsRunner Rorik x Grand Ch. PR Mountain Rain Dancer Quinault) is owned by Kay Lee Brown and Ginger Corley.
  • Grand Ch. PR Rain Mountain Tonasket Thunder (North Wind Kiska x Ch. PR Mystic Sahalee Rain) will be bred to Ch. PR Hickory Hill Spring Rain (Bella) in November of 2004.  Thunder is owned by Ginger Corley and Bella is owned by Pam Chambers and Ginger Corley
  • Thunder will also be bred to PR High Plains Cascade (Cassie) in November of 2004.  Cassie (Ch. PR Rain Mountain Bannack x Ch. PR WoodsRunner Phoenix) is owned by Corine Lindhorst and Kristy McRae.
Upcoming Events

Please note -- our participation in weight pull competitions during the summer is dictated by temperatures.  As northern breeds, Chinook can heat up far faster than the other short coated breeds so we don't pull if temps are forecasted to be much over 70 degrees.

Chinook Breeders Forum is Up and Running
To foster education of all Chinook breeders and to help mentor new and prospective breeders, the Chinook Breeders Forum was kicked off at the 2004 Chinook National Specialty.  As a first step, an active and informative email group has been established.  If you are interested in joining, please email Joyce Maley or Ginger Corley.  Later activities will be expanded to include a variety of activities and projects.
